There's a very simple truth to any successful weight loss diet:
If you're losing weight, it's because of a Calorie Deficit. And if you're not losing weight, you're not in a calorie deficit.
A Calorie Deficit is a science-y way of saying that you're eating less calories than you're burning.
It's actually basic science that we've known about for over a hundred years, but like I mentioned earlier, it's something you can do for free and so marketers generally don't mention it.
Calorie Deficits are required for weight loss because as long as your body has enough energy coming in from the foods you eat, it never has any reason to start burning body fat.
But if you eat less calories than your body wants to burn, then your body has to get the remaining energy from somewhere because you're not getting it from your diet.
And it winds up getting that energy by burning body fat, but only if you're in a Calorie Deficit.
Simple concept, and you can apply it to your own weight loss really easily.
If you're American like me, simply take your bodyweight in pounds and multiply it by 11-13 (11 if you're sedentary, 13 if you're active). That's how many calories you should eat each day in order to lose weight.
For all of my metric friends reading this, you would take your bodyweight in Kilograms, multiply it by 2.24, and then multiply that number by 11-13 in order to find your calorie target for fat loss.
Once you've got this figured out, you know exactly how much food you can eat each day while still losing fat.
While calorie intake is the most important thing for weight loss, protein intake is the most important thing in determining how easy and effective your weight loss approach is.
For starters, protein is the most filling nutrient. Meaning that the more protein you eat, the less hungry you feel.
Considering that most dieters struggle with cravings, hunger pangs, and cheat meals, it makes sense to focus on eating more protein because it helps to reduce all of those problems.
Additionally, protein will be vital in shaping how much muscle you build and maintain as you lose weight.
A lot of diet programs fail to mention this, but when you lose weight on a diet some of that weight can actually come from muscle.
That's a bit of a problem because muscle is what makes you look good as you lose fat, and it's important for feeling strong and healthy on a day-to-day basis.
You can largely prevent or reverse muscle loss while dieting if you follow a very high protein diet.
Most of the science suggests you want to eat 0.8-1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass, or 1.8-2.2 grams per kilogram of lean body mass.
Do that, and your results will be dramatically better than any diet you've tried in the past.
99% of workout routines you see online fall under the category of "body-part splits."
It's a fancy way of saying that you target each body part one day per week.
So you've got a chest day, a back day, a leg day, a shoulder day, and an arm day...
Pretty standard stuff.
Unfortunately, most of the research we have now suggests that training each body part one day per week is less-than-ideal if you want the best results.
The reason is that most research suggests that your muscles recover within 24-72 hours after a workout.
So if you're only training a muscle group once per week, that means within about 3 days it's fully recovered and ready to be worked again.
But with most workout routines you find online, even though a muscle has fully recovered within the first 3 days, the routine doesn't train that muscle again until the next week.
If you workout your arms on Friday, and they're fully recovered by Monday, why would you wait all the way until Friday again to train them? That's a 4-day period that you could have trained those arms again, sending the signal to burn fat and tone up!
It just doesn't make sense, and yet that's exactly how most strength training routines are set up.
While I can appreciate keeping certain things "old-school," your training shouldn't be one of them (at least if you want to get the best results possible).
Instead, you want to try to train each muscle group 2-3 times per week.
This can be achieved with :
Which one of those you choose won't matter too much, just know that all of those options are going to give you better results than sticking with the generic "body-part splits" that you'll find on most fitness websites.
